Visiting Playa Blanca in Lanzarote

The growth of tourism around the world has seen some towns and cities springing up overnight. For instance, the city-state of Dubai hardly existed twenty years ago and now markets itself as a destination for people who like to go shopping.

Lanzarote on the other hand was always an obvious place to develop as a tourist hotspot. Not only does it have the best weather in Europe, thanks to its southerly location, but it is an extremely beautiful island in its own right. Blessed with nearly ninety beaches, many with golden sand, it would be more surprising if northern Europeans didn’t want to come here.

As a result, it has more than forty years history of welcoming visitors at all times of the year. And whilst the older resort of Puerto del Carmen retains its charm and well developed tourist infrastructure, it is the newest resort in the south that attracts many new holidaymakers to visit.

The demand for holidays in Playa Blanca comes in part from the microclimate it enjoys, which makes it a couple of degrees hotter than other parts of the island. And whilst there are plenty of Lanzarote villas to choose from, holiday villas in Playa Blanca do particularly well due to their modern design and extra features.

The other feature that Playa Blanca can boast of is its proximity to the range of beaches known as the Playas de Papagayo. Widely regarded by many as the best beaches to be found in the whole of the Canaries, they consist of six coves and bays of white sand, surrounded by crystal clear waters that are ideal for scuba diving.

Their unspoilt beauty is largely maintained by the fact that there has been no development of the land adjacent to them. The area is protected as a natural reserve, so that access is via a dirt track or by boat. There are little to no services at the beaches, which makes a visit with a hire car recommended.

And as car hire in Lanzarote is not expensive, this is a preferred option for many of the island’s visitors who want to get out and explore. As it is not just the sights in the immediate vicinity of Playa Blanca that deserve a visit. There are seven centres of art and culture which represent the major tourist attractions to be found on Lanzarote and each of these is well worth seeing.
